Yes — and it's one of the best reasons microcement exists. But 'yes' comes with conditions, and anyone who says yes without looking at your floor is guessing.
Why going over tiles is a big deal
Half the cost and most of the misery of a renovation is the rip-out: the skip bin, the jackhammer, the dust through the house, the weeks of an unusable bathroom. Microcement is applied directly over existing tile — hand-trowelled in thin coats, sealed into one seamless, waterproof surface. The tiles never leave. Your grout lines disappear under it forever.
The conditions (this is the part cheap quotes skip)
- —The tiles must be sound — drummy or loose tiles get repaired or removed first; covering a failing substrate just moves the failure date
- —Movement joints stay — buildings move; joints get honoured through the system, not buried
- —Wet areas need waterproofing under them — if your existing shower has no membrane, a new surface on top changes nothing; we verify it or build it
What it looks like finished
One monolithic surface, no joins, no grout. Over a tiled floor you lose around 2–3mm of height — not the 100mm a re-screed costs you.
