How to Choose a Microcement Applicator (Without Getting Burnt)

Microcement is having a moment on the Gold Coast — which means people who did a weekend course are now quoting bathrooms. Here's how to protect yourself, whoever you hire.
Five questions that expose a bad applicator in two minutes
- 1.'Can I see a real finished job?' Not photos — photos are easy. A real local job, or a video walkthrough of one, with a suburb attached. If everything they show you could be from anywhere, it might be
- 2.'What happens under the finish in my shower?' The only acceptable answer involves the word membrane and ends with in writing
- 3.'Who is actually on the trowel?' Microcement is a craft. You're hiring hands, not a brochure. Ask if the person quoting is the person finishing
- 4.'What do you do if my tiles are drummy?' Right answer: fix or remove them first. Wrong answer: she'll be right
- 5.'Why is your quote half everyone else's?' Sometimes there's a good reason. Usually the reason is questions two and four
