Microcement Bathroom Palm Beach: A Practical Guide for Coastal Homes

If you are planning a bathroom renovation in Palm Beach, microcement is worth a proper look. It goes on 3 to 5mm thick and runs across floors, walls and shower areas with no grout lines and no joins. That matters in a bathroom, where grout is usually the first thing to stain, crack or grow mould.

Micro Cement King (MCK) is a specialist microcement applicator based on the Gold Coast. We work across the Gold Coast, South-East Queensland and Northern NSW. This guide covers how a microcement bathroom is built, what the coastal conditions mean for the job and how to look after it.

Why microcement suits a Palm Beach bathroom

Palm Beach homes deal with salt air, sand tracked in from the beach and high humidity for much of the year. Bathrooms take the worst of it. Steam, damp towels and poor airflow all work against a finish with lots of joints.

Microcement is seamless. There are no grout lines to trap moisture or soap scum, so there is less to scrub and less to go wrong. The same surface can run from the floor up the walls and into the shower, which gives a clean, continuous look in both small ensuites and larger main bathrooms.

It also suits the mix of homes in the area. Older brick homes often have tight, dated bathrooms that benefit from a full refresh. Newer builds and renovated beachside homes tend to want a calm, modern finish. Microcement works in both. For a wider comparison, see Microcement vs Tiles: Which Is Right for Your Project?.

How we build a microcement bathroom

A bathroom is not a place to cut corners. Every MCK job follows four steps.

1. Substrate assessment. Before any coat goes on, we check moisture, surface condition and structural integrity. In a wet area this step decides whether the job lasts.

2. Surface preparation. We grind, prime and level. Substrate faults telegraph through the finish, so a wavy wall or a cracked floor will show if it is not dealt with first.

3. Multi-coat application. The work takes a minimum of 3 days of application. Coats are applied by hand, and each one is cured before the next goes on.

4. Sealing. The sealer is chosen for the job. Wet areas get a wet-area sealer over the wet-area membrane installed before the finish. The microcement is a decorative finish, not the membrane. The sealer protects the surface from water, soap and daily use.

You can read more about each stage on our process page.

Showers, floors and vanities

Microcement can cover most of a bathroom, but each area has its own needs.

Shower areas. Walls and floors can be done in one continuous surface. With a wet-area membrane installed beforehand and a wet-area sealer on top, the shower becomes a single seamless space with no grout to maintain.

Floors. Bathroom floors see wet feet, spills and cleaning products. The seamless finish has no grout lines, so there are no joins to clean around.

Vanities and benchtops. Microcement can also be applied to vanities, so the cabinetry, benchtop and walls can match. If you want to see how it works on benchtops, read Microcement Benchtops: The Alternative to Stone That Architects Are Specifying.

Walls and features. A full-height feature wall behind the vanity or bath is a common request. We also apply microcement to architectural features such as curved walls.

Choosing colour and finish

Most coastal bathrooms lean towards soft, warm neutrals: sand, stone, light grey and off-white. They suit natural light and hide water marks better than very dark tones. Darker colours look great but show mineral marks and dried water spots more readily, so it is worth thinking about how much upkeep you want.

Our colour selection guide is a good place to start before you decide.

Looking after a microcement bathroom

Care is simple, but it has to be done right.

  • Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner.
  • Avoid bleach, ammonia and acidic cleaners.
  • Do not use abrasive pads or steam cleaners.
  • Wipe down after showers where you can, and keep the room ventilated.

Bathroom floors that get regular foot traffic are best treated like any other high-traffic floor, which means resealing every 2 to 3 years. That small job keeps the protection in place. Our maintenance guide covers it in more detail.

Every MCK application carries a 7 year warranty. For what that does and does not cover, read What Does a Microcement Warranty Actually Cover?.

Questions we get asked

Is microcement really okay in a shower? Yes, when it is prepared and sealed properly. Wet areas get a wet-area membrane before the finish and a wet-area sealer over the top, and the substrate is checked and prepared before any coat goes on.

Will salt air and humidity affect it? Coastal conditions are hard on a lot of materials. Microcement has no grout to break down, and the sealer is chosen for the area. Good ventilation and regular cleaning with the right products do the rest.

Can you put microcement over existing tiles? The substrate has to be assessed first, including moisture, surface condition and structural integrity.

How long does a bathroom take? Application takes a minimum of 3 days, because each hand-applied coat has to cure before the next. Preparation and sealing add to that, and the final timeline depends on the size and condition of the room.
